LOUISE M. DAVIES SYMPHONY HALL
Acoustic and Architectural Renovation of Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall
John was the project manager for this 6 year, $12.5MM project: Built in 1980, the hall’s large volume and seating capacity initially resulted in less than ideal results. In 1986, the San Francisco Symphony undertook a project to improve the acoustics and update the architecture to meet the needs of people of San Francisco. Kirkegaard Associates and Skidmore Owings & Merrill completed renovations in 1992 which resulted in substantial improvements.

The modifications included:
-
narrowing and shaping the walls above the stage to reduce the volume of space and increased use of reflectors
-
replacing the cloud of reflector discs with a more effective array of curved rectangular panels covering a larger area and now computer adjustable
-
moving the walls of the floor-level seating inward to make the audience area narrower and more.
